Males and females both wish to have sex and produce offspring. In human terms, a man and a woman may wish to get married and start a family. Courtship is the process of getting to know each other to see if it is a good match. If the courtship is successful, the male and female will come together, at least to have sex and mate, and possibly also to buy big-screen video monitor, etc. The courtship is unsuccessful if either one rejects the other one. In humans, this usually hurts the feelings of the rejected party and they get drunk. Courtship often involves showing off, to try to prove to the other that you are a "real catch". This can be done by puffing up the feathers (for birds) or by bragging about which college you attended (for humans).
