holes in the surface of the dice (plural) or die (singular) are to indicate the count value of that side.

The sides of a die have from one to six indentations (holes). The indentations are arranged such that the total of the spots on opposite sides always adds up to seven. 6 is opposite one, 5 is opposite 2, and 4 is opposite 3.

Now, to the question, a cube has flat sides meeting at the edges to form a sharp corner at 90 degrees. A die, has the sharp edges and corners rounded off so there are not sharp edges or corners.

A cube is a geometric shape -- a hexahedron -- in which there are 6 square faces.

Dice are polyhedral objects used as random number generators. Standard dice (like those in casinos or Monopoly) are Cubes with numbers or pips (dots) on them. So in that instance the only difference between a cube and dice is the numbers.

However, dice can be other shapes in addition to cubes: in role-playing games it's common to see dice with 4, 8, 10, 12, and 20 sides. These are standard gaming dice
