The difference is only in the relationship as you define it, except when it comes to law. A boyfriend may have just as much responsibility as a husband, especially if you have a family together, and some husbands take on very minimal responsibilities. Bottom line... that's for the two of you to decide, and really, everyone is ultimately responsible for their self.
A piece of paper making your relationship official as far as I can see nowadays in a religious light. For non-religious people including myself I find there is no difference. My wife IS my girlfriend - the official paperwork is only a formality ... we were committed to each other long before we even considered marriage. We treat each other as if we were still dating ... as boyfriend and girlfriend ... keeps the relationship fresh and healthy.
