In some cases, at least, an AP edition is a slightly abbreviated version of a college textbook. For example, I directly compared the regular and AP editions of World Civilizations: The Global Experience, fourth edition, 2004, by Stearns, et. al. The regular edition covered The Origins of Civilizations and The Classical Period in World History in 243 pages. The AP edition covered those sections in about 100 pages. The remainder of the textbooks seemed to be identical.
