What is the difference between telephone and telegraph and which one is better why?

In its basic, original form the telephone made it possible for people to speak to each other over wires over fairly long distances. The telegraph also provided for communication over wires but words had to be converted into a special code which was sent as a series of electrical pulses by special operators and then converted back into words by special operators at the receiving end.
Although telegraphic systems gradually improved so that they became much faster at communicating than telephones telephones are so much more convenient that they have entirely replaced telegraphs.
