As it refers to LTL (less than truckload) deliveries; stem time is the amount of time it takes a driver to get to his first stop. Some union contracts are built around the concept that stem time should be paid as straight time to the driver since he is performing a non-value added service. With that thought process, a delivery route that has a 45 minute stem time can pay a 9 hour day as straight time. Peddle time begins once the first delivery or pick up is made.
