shellac nail polish is half gel and half polish, and its cured by UV light and dries IMMEDIATELY after the manicure process. the UV light sorta makes the shellac nail paint go plasticy, which makes it lasts longer. its thin, but super glossy and lasts up to 2 weeks.
i'm not sure what lacquer nail polish is made out of, but i know that it dries super quick (without UV light) and can be applied in one quick flick. it's also super glossy.
so maybe the difference is that shellac nail polish is half gel and it's cured by UV light? idk. hope i helped:)
Shellac and lacquer are both fairly easy to identify because they will redissolve in their original solvents. If alcohol (solvent alcohol from the hardware store, not rubbing alcohol) dissolves it then it's shellac. If lacquer thinner softens it, then it's lacquer. (lacquer thinner will also dissolve shellac, but alcohol will not immediately soften lacquer, so do the alcohol check first.) If neither alcohol nor lacquer thinner immediately affect it, then it's probably varnish.* http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/wood/msg0822004022412.html

It removes paint (lacquer or enamel), varnish (or shellac). READ the label CAREfully before purchase for the exact type of finish you wish to remove.
I have buffed out lacquer (which is very similar to shellac) with 4/0 steel wool. Make sure to use this grade, the smallest you can get. Just make sure the finish is totally dry and be very gentle. I would let the finish dry a couple of days or more if it is fresh just to make sure. If you are trying to eliminate the lines from the shellac going into the grain of a wood, than multiple coats of shellac will be needed. I have a secretary desk that my mother refinished many years ago, and my father told me that she used 4 coats of finish on it, and it looks really nice. I don't know if she used shellac or lacquer on it but I am pretty sure she used steel wool on it. You can start with very fine sandpaper for the first few coats, than switch to the steel wool for the final buffing to speed things up.
There are no special coatings for outdoor wicker. However, clear varnish, lacquer, or shellac can be used to provide a protective layer. Liquid furniture wax may also be applied afterwards for extra protection.
