Reading entails decoding printed messages into sounds whereas comprehension is an on going process of evolving thinking.it is the simultaneously extracting and constructing meaning through interaction and involvement with written language. Extracting meaning is to understand what an author has stated, explicitly or implicitly. Constructing meaning is to interpret what an author has said by bringing one's

'capacities, abilities, knowledge, and experiences' to bear on what he or she is reading.

Reading is the act of decoding and understanding written words, while comprehension involves understanding the meaning of the text by connecting it to our existing knowledge and experiences. Reading is the process of recognizing words and understanding their individual meanings, while comprehension involves interpreting and synthesizing those meanings to grasp the overall message of the text.

Reading for study often requires a combination of (1) rote memorization and (2) comprehension, such as how something works.

For example, in HS Biology you might read about the parts of a frog and how a frog functions internally.

Critical reading involves little to no rote memorization, a lot of comprehension, and the ability to take a position about what you read.

For example, a newspaper article states, "All humane societies should kill stray cats and dogs and close their doors. This would unburden taxpayers who must food the bill to house, feed, and care for so many homeless animals. Taxpayers now support these humane societies through 3% of all property taxes paid each year."

Critical thinking means you ask yourself--

  1. Who wrote the item? Do they have bias? Do they have an agenda?
  2. Where did the writer get his/her facts?
  3. Are the facts accurate as stated? Or are they skewed? meaning, are the facts slanted to support one view over another view?
  4. What is your analysis of "the problem"?
  5. What position do you take of "the problem"?
  6. How do you support the position you took? (even if your position is not supported by "facts")

As an example, critical reading, critical thinking, and critical response might lead you to write:

Despite that taxpayers contribute 3% to the budgets of humane societies, society has an obligation to house, feed, and care for homeless cats and dogs. (and you'd go on to give reasons that support your position).

if you're reading, you're just going through the book.

if you're studying, you're reading, highlighting, asking questions, bookmarking, and note taking. Studying is ACTIVE reading.
