Earth ground, in many cases - is used as a reference. The potential of a conductor who is directly connected to Earth Ground has a very low, consistant potential. It is used to help "define the electrical potential of conductors RELATIVE to the Earth's potential."

A protective earth or P.E., is used to provide a path for current flow to prevent an end user from becoming exposed to a live component or conductor, mostly due to failing insulators (IE a short circuit melting a piece of insulation, exposing a live conductive wire that is in contact with the enclosure of a product - in which the user may be in contact with). The entire purpose of the PE is to provide a barrier between the end user and the live conductors to prevent shock hazard.

The purpose of earth ground, is to provide a constant reference potential for other conductors.

What is the difference between selv and pelv transformer?

the difference between pelv and selv is that pelv can have a protective conductor(earth)and selv cant.

What is a difference between ground fault and earth fault?

They mean the same thing, a current to ground/earth that shouldn't exist in the circuit.

Can you use the earth wire between room stat and honeywell board as a neutral?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!The protective earth ground wire is only there to provide a low resistance path to ground in the event of a short circuit so as to trip the protective device. Operational current is never, under any circumstances allowed to be passed on earth ground. Use neutral for neutral and ground for ground.CONSULT A QUALIFIED AND LICENSED ELECTRICIAN !!!!

What is the difference between a fault and a fold?

a fault is a large crack in the earth. a fold is when the ground gets bent.

In the electrical system of the US what is the difference between the neutral and the PE Ground?

US NEC: The neutral conductor is an insulated grounded conductor used as the current return in a circuit. The color designation for neutral is white. The protective ground (PE, protective - earth) is a non-insultated grounding conductor used to shunt fault current to ground, tripping the protective device. The color designation for PE ground is green. Neutral and PE ground are tied together at the distribution panel. PE ground is also connected to a solid earth ground, such as grounding rods driven into the earth. Downstream of the distribution panel, PE ground is never used to carry operational current. Any current flow on PE Ground, other than parasitic current, is considered a ground fault, which must be corrected. In fact, GFCI (Ground Fault Current Interrupting) breakers will trip when neutral current does not match hot current, an indication of PE ground current flow.

What is the difference between a peanut and a monkey nut?

There is no difference. Monkey nut is another name for peanuts, as are goober peas, ground nuts (or earth nuts) and pig nuts.

What is the difference between protective and functional earth?

protective earth (PE) is a conductor, other than a main earthing conductor, connecting any portion of the earthing system to the portion of the electrical installation. functional earth (FE) is an earthing arrangement provided to ensure correct operation of electrical equipment or to permit reliable and proper functioning of an installation

When you test the outlet you get no current between power and neutral but you get it between power and ground?

There is an open circuit on neutral. You should have power between hot and neutral, as well as between hot and ground. Note well, however, that you should not pull any power between hot and ground, because ground is not intended to be a current carrying conductor - it is only there as a protective earth ground in the case of fault. You can not easily tell, at the outlet, if neutral and ground is reversed - you need to pull a load and then double check with a clamp on ammeter at the distribution panel.

Should 230Volts exits between live wire and protective earth?

yes

Why is it dangerous when ozone is near Earth's surface?

Ozone is a protective substance at the atmosphere level. It can be dangerous as a pollutant at the level of ground.

What does the earth pin do on a 3 pin plug?

The earth, or ground, pin on a 3 pin plug is a connection to safety ground. It is intended to be connected to the chassis of the appliance, in such a way that operational current neverflows on that conductor. The intention is that, if hot were to become shorted to chassis, then fault current would flow and the protective device in the distribution panel would trip. This works because ground and neutral are connected together in the distribution panel, and only in the distribution panel. It is also possible that, if the circuit is protected with a GFCI (Ground Fault Current Interrupting) protective device, then even slight imbalances between hot and neutral, i.e. partial current flow on ground, would trip the protective device. The earth, or ground, pin on a 3 pin plug is a connection to safety ground.
