The original deep blued finish was swapped out for a cheaper metal finish on post 64's. Winchester also used stamped steel and cheaper parts for the 94's so that production costs would remain low enough for average hunters. Pre 64's are excellent, but for deer hunting etc post 64's are still good firearms.
About $500. In 1964, the bean counters took over at Winchester so more attention was given to maximizing profits and less to providing a superior product. Two of the same model made a year apart will be of noticably different quality.

My understanding is there is a receiver screw at the base of the lever that the post 1964 models do not have. The post-64 began with serial number 2,700,000.
