Hiding the truth is when you don't reveal the truth. It does not necessarily mean that you're lying, just that you're not telling the whole story. Typically, it is called a white lie. Outright lying is falsifying information. When you lie, you say something false even though you are fully aware that it isn't true. It is much worse than a white lie, though those aren't great either.
