Like is a preposition and will always connect a noun with a noun or a noun phrase with a noun phrase.

As is a conjunction and will always connect a subject+verb idea with a subject+verb idea.

eg:

-As you can see, the dog is big (subject+verb linked with a subject+verb)

-Etan is a taxi driver, like most of his friends (most of his friends isn't a subject+verb idea).
