Usually, aluminum pastes can be divided into two major types, leafing and non-leafing. They are almost the same in processing technique, but leafing pastes use stearic acid or saturated fatty acid as grinding aids while non-leafing pastes use oleic acid or unsaturated fatty acid.
◆ Leafing pastes
In leafing pastes, an opaque silver film is formed near the paint film because of the orientation arrangement of aluminum particles. This opaque quality is the main element that makes leafing pastes become an important functional raw material. Leafing paste is usually applied in roof coatings, which has a higher recommend of protection, maintaining paints, anti-corrosive paints, reflecting coatings, imitating-plating effect coating and commercial application paints. The appearance of leafing pastes could be various, which can change from rough and white to grey and highly reflective, with the different size of particles. The leafing paste with thick particles has the minimum coverage, and its structure is rougher, but users can get the whitest and brightest coating. On the other way, pastes with thin particles own the best coverage, the smoothest structure and the highest reflectivity.
◆ Non-leafing pastes
Non-leafing paste is uniform parallelly distributed in the whole paint film, and the appearance of paint film that non-leafing pastes form is different from the one formed by leafing pastes. It can mix with many pigments and be applied to various systems, so non-leafing paste obtains a unique effect for industrial coating. However, all the pigments or dyes that are used together with non-leafing pastes must be transparent. Only in this way can it achieve the vivid effect of metal surface. There are many kinds of non-leafing pastes, and the tinctorial strength is various from weak to strong, particles are from thick to thin, and the appearance differs from white and shining to grey and refined. Also, there is a series of acid resistant which reduce the bad influence that adverse environment like industrial smog and acid rain do to the coatings.
Non-leafing pastes can be divided into 5 types according to the difference of processing technique and the shape of aluminum flakes,
Temperature-resistant flashy pastes series, which is silver type or silver-shape products. It is suitable for the painting system that needed to be solidified under high temperature. This series owns strongest flashing effect and color-changing along with angle. Its masking power is of middle level while the dispersion is good. The products are especially suitable for OEM (original equipment manufacturer), coil coating and fluorocarbon coatings.
Imitation plating pastes series, which is the fine level product of silver-shape products. Its main characteristic is having good metallic feeling and coverage, which make it fit for coating of plastic products.
Glittering silver paste can be divided into two types, one is thick sparkling paste, and the other is thin sparkling paste.
Thick sparkling paste is traditional product, which possesses highly metallic feeling and be less expensive. But its hiding power is relatively poor. Thick sparkling paste is used on plastic coatings.
Middle-thin sparkling paste is silver shape products with centralized particles and average metallic effect. The particle size from14μm to 20μm. Thin sparkling paste is used in plastic paints and car refinishing paint,
Thin sparkling paste owns a characteristic of higher metallic effect and good particles position arrangement. Its size of particles is various from 6μm to15μm, which makes it suitable for plastic paint and printing ink system.
Leafing imitation plating pastes shapes in silver coin and are appropriate for baking varnish with plating effect like electro mobile and bicycle varnish.
