lap band refers to a type of weight losssurgery where an adjustable gastric band is placed around the top of the patients stomach creating a small pouch where the food must pass before going to the stomach to be digested. This creates a sort of hour glass effect were the food sits in the pouch and causes it to temporarily becomes stretched when eating. This results in the stomach sending a signal to the brain to indicate that the person is full. This surgery requires follow up care to ensure that the band is adjusted to the correct level and is not too tight, or too loose. With a good adjustment the person will decrease their portion size and remain full for longer periods. In addition or diet and exercise, the band is a great tool for weight loss.
