I've been wondering the same thing.
But when i talk to someone i don't really wanna talk to to, i usually just say Hi. For some reason Hi seems to be short, and sounds like you don't want to say anymore. And to me, Hey seems like a conversation starter, like its more dragged out. (if that makes any sense)

Hola' its like saying hi but you saying hello its not a difference u still say hola' !. :)
