An island is a body of land completely surrounded by water. A mainland is a larger body of land surrounded by water. A mainland is the largest of the other islands. A mainland isn't determined by size, it's determined by size compared to other islands. For example; Hawaii is a mainland. Kauai is an island. This is because Hawaii is larger than Kauai. Depending on how you look at it, Hawaii would be an island, and North America would be the mainland.

A mainland is an island, but an island isn't always a mainland.

An island is a piece of land surrounded by water, while a mainland is a larger body of land that is connected to a continent. Islands are typically smaller in size and separated from the mainland by bodies of water.
