They are so close together that they are almost touching. An island style keyboard is the same thing as a "chicklet keyboard" in which the keys are separated from one another. They keys often resemble chicklet gum especially if they are hard. Also, take a look at the keys, you'll see that each one is separated like each one is an independent "island".
