The instructions should be with the meter. If not contact the manufacturer
A theodolite is a survey instrument. A tachometer tells you how many Revs per minute an engine is turning.
what's an autometer?
I would say Yes However I would suggest you try to find the manufacturer of your tachometer on the web and check out their support site and email them if needed for your particuliar vehicle. For instance below is a link to Autometer's Tech Tip web site however unless you own an Autometer Tach this may be useless to you. There are so many different ignition systems today that it would be difficult to explain each. So its best to get the info from the pro's. , EzForJesus http://hp.autometer.com/techtips/techtips.html PS Autometer makes some great tachometers and you can get the support you need along with them.
you've got to be joking but in case you are serious no they are two completely different things having nothing to do with each other.

A tachometer works by measuring how many time a spark plug fires. If the tachometer is designed to determine the rpm of an 8 cylinder engine it will not show the correct speed of a 2 cylinder engine. If I remember correctly if the tachometer designed for an 8 cylinder is used on a 4 cylinder engine it will show twice the number of actual rpm. So an 8 cylinder tachometer used on a 2 cylinder engine will show 4 times the actual rpm of the 2 cylinder engine. If you check around there are special tachometers designed for 2 cylinder engines.
If you don't have a distributor on your car, you will need to get a tach adapter for your car. So that you can get an rpm signal from your car to the tachometer.Hey dude, here's how to connect the green wire from your tachometer: Tach output is obtained from PCM (powertrain control module) which is a 104 wire connector, and is located behind the passenger side kick panel. Look for pin number 48, which is usually an orange wire with a white stripe.(4.6L is = 4 ppr)Your best bet is to check out the autometer's web site which provides most all the information you might need. If you can't find the info email autometer tech support.Go to test connector inside the fusebox under the hood, it is a t-shaped plug. Tach is the terminal on the top left of the T. The wire under the terminal is white or white/red.
There are a number of places one is able to purchase autometer gauges. One can purchase them from eBay where there are many listed for sale or from Auto Anything.
A tachometer that shows the wrong reading and get stuck sometimes could be caused by faulty wiring between the transmission and tachometer. It could be caused by a defective instrument cluster.
The easiest way I come up with is a little strange but there are very few differences between them. If it has a tachometer and a radio antenna then it a LS. If it has a tachometer and no antenna then its a GS. If it doesn't have a tachometer then it is a RS.
