A firearm is basically a gun; a device designed to fire a bullet. A weapon can be anything. If I use a pencil to poke you in the eye, the pencil becomes a weapon.

In the military I was taught that "gun" is slang for penis and "weapon" is what you use to kill the enemy. Not sure if this applies, but it might keep you from getting killed by a drill instructor!
