The difference is the life cycle, size of the worm and the kinds of damage each type can do. Pinworms are small worms and are generally more irritating than anything. They cause severe itching around the anus because their life cycle includes the female worm exiting the body and laying eggs on the skin around the anus using a very irritating substance to glue them in place. Roundworm, on the other hand, can grow to be very large and can cause severe damage to the lungs, because their life cycle includes migration through the lungs before they mature. Once mature, they can be a cause of malnutrition and impaction in the gastrointestinal tract. In animals (and humans) that are not their normal species to infect, some roundworms can enter the body and migrate through the eyes, brain, lungs and liver and cause damage to those organs. This is generalized information because there are many types of roundworms and pinworms, but it gives an idea of the differences in the two.
