A Seamount is a mountain that rises up from the ocean floor, but is below sea level. (above sea level, it would be considered an island). It is often created by volcanic activity.

A Guyot is usually an extinct volcano that had, at one time, been above the surface that has weathered away. As it erodes, the top becomes flat. Over time, the sea floor moves away from oceanic ridges and the guyot sinks below the ocean surface.
