the gear ratio is the only difference. In the M20 and M21 the gears were cut with more of a slope or angle to them, while M22 gears where "straight cut" and having almost no slope to them at all. This is why the M22 has it's distinctive whine when under load. The cases are the same but its what's inside that counts !

What transmission to run in a 350 chevy small block?

For an automatic, Powerglide, Th350, Th400. These are the older ones. Powerglide has 2 forward gears, with about a 1.80 first gear. The Turbo Hydros have 3 forward gears, with about a 2.60 first gear. Early stick shift trans are, Saginaw 3, or 4 speeds, which were made in the 70's, and are not strong. Muncie M20, M21, and M22's, were all 4 speeds, made by Chevy in Muncie indiana, and were used behind small, and big block Chevies. M20 is a 2.20 low gear, closer ratio, for road racing. M21 was 2.56 first gear, and wider ratio for drag racing. M22 was the same as M22, but stronger with straight cut gears, and very noisey. Then, of course, the Borg-Warner super T-10. There were three designs of this trans. All had around a 2.86 first gear. The first design had a cast iron case, and coarse exit spline. Weak. The 2nd, and 3rd designs, were aluminum, and had a fine in, and output spline. Much stronger, and more quiet than the M22. These were "outsourced" thropughout the 60's, and 70's, alternating with the Muncies. These were al the transmissions that Chevy made through the life of the 350. In 88, when the 5.7 debuts, there were another whole line. Most had a four speed with overdrive, however, none had achieverd the strength of the 70's models.

Do you have a m22 transmission in your 1966 gto?

It looks like the M22 did not come out 'till '67. Not to say it could not have been changed at some point. Find the serial #. '63 to '66 do not have a year designator in the seial #. Example P0101 would mean P- Muncie 4 speed 01 - January 01 - the 1st day From '67 to '68 the month got a letter code and the year code is present. Example - P8A01 : P - Muncie 4 speed 8 - 1968 A - January 01 - 1st day '68 through '74 have a letter at the end to code the ratio.
