In many ways, a tale is the same as a lie: both are made up stories. But one big difference is that everyone knows a tale is untrue and did not really happen. A tale does not leave another person feeling distrusting or betrayed.
Lies, for the other person, feels like the liar tried to deliberately fool someone. That makes people distrust liars. They cannot count on a liar because truth and fiction are mixed together. When children tell lies, it makes parents angry because liars cannot be trusted.
If you have a tendency to "lie" about real events, try writing those lies down as tales--as a story. Write it ALL out. Go overboard and really tell BIG lies in the story!
But in real life, tell the truth, even if you think you might get in trouble.
