A hero is a person who is known for their courageous endeavors and major contributions to other people. For example, many people consider Harriet Tubman a hero for helping thousands of blacks escape from slavery. Also, many people consider Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King heroes for their bravery and confidence which helped to end segregation. The fire fighters in 9/11 were definitely heroes for their extraordinary bravery and courage saving millions of people while putting their own lives in danger. Life guards who have saved people are also considered heroes.
A legend is someone who is remembered for their impact on society or culture. For example, one of the best examples of a legend is Elvis Presley. Even though he never did anything brave or courageous (like a hero), he dramatically changed the evolution of music in America. Before him, no one had ever heard of rock n' roll. There are many other music legends such as The Beatles and Tupac Shakur. Christopher Columbus is considered a legend for discovering America. BUT.. a legend isn't the same thing as just being famous. A legend is someone who has impacted/revolutionized our culture. Someone who will be remembered 50 years down the road. Also, a hero can also be a legend. And a legend can also be a hero.
