The difference between a key and an island is a Key does not have a fresh water source. Also the weather will affect a Key. A hurricane can completely wipe out a key or a large tide can bring in sand and debris, making the Key larger. Also generally speaking, Keys are smaller than islands. Some Keys you can drive to (The Florida Keys) and some Keys you have to take a ferry boat to (Egmont Key in Florida).
