What is the difference between a gigabit router and a regular one?

The difference between a gigabyte router and a regular router is the speed it proceses. A normal router has a speed of 100 megabytes per second, a gigabyte is 1000 megabytes per second. This is the speed information travel from the router to your computer. If you're looking into buying a router, get the gigabyte one. Note that this is not the speed of the wireless connection your wireless router provides - it is the speed of the wired network ports on its back. The actual speed of the wireless connection is denoted by a letter; either b, g or n. N is the fastest wireless connection available today, and is usually backwards compatible with b and g type wireless network cards.

The question is very vague, but I am going to try and answer it as best I can. Routers, Switches and Hubs transport/transfer speeds at several speeds. 10mb, 100mb and now 1,000mb(1,000 megabyte = 1 gigabyte and mb = megabyte per second) . If your router supports gigabyte transfer speed and your computer supports gigabyte transfer speed, than you will definitely be able to send data faster than the 100mb speed. BUT if your router supports the gigabyte transfer speed but your computer only supports up to 100mb transfer speed, than you will only be able to transfer data up to 100mb.

In this case a gigabit router operates at a maximum speed of 1,000 megabits or 1,000,000 bits per second. Looking at the two most widely available router speeds, gigabit is 10 times quicker than a 'regular' router which operates at 100 megabits per second.
