Same thing... I am not exactly sure myself. I was told they actually the same thing though with slight deviations in the college program. the difference in title comes from different countries. for instance i am from canada and the trade is millwright though while living in australia I found out that they refer to a person with the same skill set as a fitter and turner.
"A boilermaker is a trained craftsman who produces steel fabrications from plates and sections." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boilermakers)
As far as I know , a free book no. Unless you are being tested thru a company. There are 4 levels of certification . Math a big part pythagram theorem ,learn it . Ask a local pipe fitter union local , or the closest nccer program provider . I myself am a level 4 pipe fitter and also a boilermaker both nccer certified . Trig, geometry, algebra , blueprints ,equipment......etc.
The ability to stick weld is critical to the Boilermaker. It is done on mild steel and stainless alike and in all positions. Though less overall time is spent doing so, the boilermaker must also be able to heli-arc. Again, this is done on mild steel and stainless in all positions. Some high-volume jobs will require the use of a "squirt gun". A boilermaker's welds are regularly tested (at least during their apprenticeship) to assure quality of work. Many jobs are X-Ray tested making the perfection of each and every weld a must.
