A deputy head teacher is 2nd to the head teacher and will be responsible for covering for the head teacher during a leave of absence. An assistant is litterally that, a senior member of staff there to assist with senior management responsiblities such as assessment, literacy, communications, CPD, staff training etc.

Deputies are on considerably more money but have much more responsibilities in directing school policy.
