Semantics, mostly.

To me (a native speaker of English), the word "cabin" implies one step above "roughing it" or "camping out", while "cottage" carries connotations of "quaint" and "cozy".

If I rented a small building on a vacation resort and it was described as a "cabin", I'd expect the walls to be unfinished (or painted or varnished) wood; I wouldn't expect there to be separate rooms (except for possibly a bathroom), and I'd anticipate that it was probably in the midst of some trees.

If it were called a "cottage", on the other hand, I'd expect lath-and-plaster walls (with possibly some exposed wood beams), with a living area separate from the bedroom.

It could turn out that I was sorely mistaken, of course, but that's the images that come to mind from those terms.
