Well, the Henry was a Winchester product, but didn't bear the Winchester name, so it depends on which model Winchester we're talking about.

The later guns are quite different (while somewhat similar in appearance) from Henry rifles.

The Winchester 1866 "Yellow Boy", the first lever-action to carry the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. label, was basically a design development/improvement over the older Henry.

The Henry was a very good rifle, and much feared by Confederate soldiers due to it's large-capacity magazine and high rate of fire-- but it was not very mechanically reliable if it was not stringently maintained, a feature mostly related to the open slot in the tube magazine that could allow dirt and contaminates into the mechanism.

The Winchester 1866 took the basic 1861 Henry design and improved upon it, making reliability, use and function much better overall. The 1866 also held 17 rounds vs. the Henry's 16.

From there, subsequent Winchester rifle models became the famous, accurate, reliable, and treasured masterpieces of the American West.

Who invented the Winchester rifle?

By and large, Benjamin Henry. Oliver Winchester reorganized the New haven Arms Company to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company when Henry tried to take over New Haven, feeling he had been under compensated for the design of the Henry Repeating Rifle. Winchester immediately had parts of the Henry Rifle redesigned for the Model 1866. Winchester had the magazine improved, a loading gate was added to the right side of the receiver (a Nelson King design), and wooden forearms were added, but other elements of the rifle remained the same as the Henry such as the ammunition it fired, and the double firing pin.
