Laminate Vs Vinyl
LAMINATE: is a relatively new creation, introduced about 30 years ago by Perstorp in Sweden. It is basically a Formica type Melamine surface laminated (Glued) to a very dimensionally stable and harder than hardwood; fiberboard substrate.
Usually shipped in + or- 25 sq ft boxes of planks about 8"X49" depending on the vendor.
Today the edges are finely micro milled to fit/click together without glue or nails. The floor is pieced together at the jobsite much like Tongue & groove hardwood has been for centuries. But the laminate needs no nails & just lays in place held down by Gravity & the edge trim like quarter round.
The surface is actually a photograph of whatever you want the floor to look like. Walnut, tile, oak or butterflies if it would sell.
The surface is covered with an extremely hard gel coat, which usually includes minerals such as Aluminum oxide to make it very hard.
The term Floating floor is often used to explain the way Laminate is installed..
Wood is richer, adds to the value of a home and will cost about the same on the low end for wood as the high end for laminate.
Wood starts at about $2 per sq ft & $4-8 per sq ft is common & laminate starts about $1 & $3-5 is commmon
Laminate is much harder than vinyl or even real hardwood, easier to install, easier to maintain, tougher to take abuse and easier to repair.

There are three types of wood flooring: solid, engineered, engineered floating. Solid is natural wood usually 3/4" thick. Engineered is solid piece of wood on top of compressed wood the wood is usually 1/4" thick and the compressed wood is anywhere from 1/4" to 1/2" thick. Engineered floating is thin solid piece of wood on top of compressed wood, it is thin enough so during installation it does not have to be attached to the subfloor. The solid wood is usually about 1/8" thick and the compressed is 1/4" thick. All these three types come in all different types of wood species such as bamboo.
The theory of evolution does not vs the law of thermodynamics. They are quite compatible since the earth is an open system.

Laminate flooring doesn't look quite as good as hardwood flooring, but it is less expensive and more durable. It resists stains and fading. It doesn't get nicked or scratched as easily as hardwood. I think that luxury vinyl tile or plank is a great option for a kitchen. First, it is waterproof (laminate is not and with water it can be permanently damaged. Second, luxury vinyl is usually glued down to the floor, so it is more secure and feels/sounds more real vs. a laminate floor which is floating and sounds tinny/hollow underneath. Third, if you floor is uneven/not level, the luxury vinyl will work better as it is a flexible material and can tolerate indiscrepancies; a laminate floor will move a lot of if the floor is uneven (and could even buckle and break if it's too uneven. Please note that you will still need to make sure you floor is smoothed out before putting luxury vinyl on top, as the the vinyl will telegraph the shape of what is underneath it.
I would definitely recommend against this. While laminate can be installed on top of tile, it requires that the floor is level and even. So, if your slate is rough and uneven, it is not a good subfloor to install any hard surface. If you install the laminate directly on top of an uneven floor like this, it will most likely crack and move a lot when you are walking on it. However, an alternative (albeit an expensive one), is to add self leveling cement on top of the slate and level out the floor, and then you could install the laminate on top. This might be less expensive and less difficult vs. trying to remove the slate, but it is not a cheap option.
The only reasons for installing unfinished flooring: you plan to stain the floor a color prefinished flooring doesn't come in, or you are planning to really abuse the floor so badly it will need to be refinished frequently. The finish on a prefinished floor is far more durable than anything you can apply yourself.
Wood seasoning reduces moisture content in the wood, making it more stable and less likely to warp or shrink. It can also improve the strength and durability of the wood, making it suitable for various applications. Additionally, seasoned wood is lighter and easier to work with.

Maple is a hard wood (from a leafed tree) and pine is a soft wood (from a conifer). In this case both wood also have the described character (hard vs soft) not always the case.
