(Depending on where you are, what the handgun is, what time of the year it is, how the economy is doing, your resources, etc., it can range from 10-600 USD)
True, but that is a huge range (and I don't think I would fire a $10 handgun!) Prices depend on where you will be buying from (dealer, retailer, or private party) and what shape the weapon is in. Average would be between $300 and $700. The best deals are to be had through private party sales if your state allows it. Be wary of super cheap handguns being sold at retail stores. Many are very poorly finished and have a propensity to jam. Check out gunforums.com for private party if legal, and be sure to protect yourself by getting an ID and contact info from the seller!
I own quite a few handguns and also teach concealed carry classes with students who have never owned a gun and don't know where to start. My personal recommendations would be Glock for automatic pistols and Smith & Wesson for revolvers. Ruger, Beretta, Springfield, Sig Sauer, Heckler & Koch, Colt, and Magnum Research are all well known companies with solid weapons.
Generally, the bigger the gun and the longer the barrel, the easier it will be to control. However, if you are looking for a concealed weapon, better to have a .380 in your pocket always than a .45 in your glove box 100 yards away when you need it.
Sorry, I know I went a little in depth, but personal protection and the gun you choose can either save your life or end it!
It depends on several factors, and it is too broad of a question to answer.
