A single renvoi is where a court refers the issue to foreign laws. If such laws reverts the issue to the court, the court resolves by accepting such remission and applying its own laws.

A double renvoi occurs when a court decides the issue based on its laws and those of the subject foreign laws, thus acting like a foreign court.
