The full name of "ecstasy" is "Methylenedioxymethamphetamine" or MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine ), most commonly known today by the street name ecstasy , (often abbreviated to E,X, or XTC ). MDMA has received a bad reputation for being cut with chemicals that are devastating to the human body including rat poison. Although this may happen, recent surveys of seized Ecstasy pills indicate that purity levels are generally high, and that adulterants are rare.

Because of its illegality in most countries, the typical recreational user is unable to verify the purity of a substance sold as MDMA (possibly hence your question). A small percentage of MDMA pills have been found to be cut with various substances; typical substances include caffeine ,methamphetamine and ephedrine, all of which have similar stimulant effects to MDMA.

Ecstasy comes in a variety of forms including pills, powder or crystals. Pills come in a variety of " brands ", usually identified by the icons stamped on the pills. However the brands do not consistently designate the actual active compound within the pill, as it is possible for "copycat" manufacturers to make their own pills which replicate the features of a well-known brand. Pure MDMA is only available in powder form. This is because when pressed into pill tablets, MDMA powder is always mixed with pill binders because pure MDMA cannot be pressed.

Ecstasy is the name of any drug that contains the active ingredient MDMA (3,4-methylendioxymethamphetamine). However every ecstasy pill is different and there is no quantity of substance so every pill will contain a different quantity of MDMA and some pills could contain no MDMA at all.

It all depends on what the pill presser wants to put in, of course. A number of factors influence this decision. If it is too hard to obtain the MDMA (which is ecstasy) then three different situations may occur for the pill:

1) MDMA is put in, but minimally. The pill is filled with other substances (ie commonly speed)

2) A similar-synthesis to MDMA that is easier to obtain is put in it. (MDA/MDEA [other forms of ecstasy, both with differing effects])

3) A different(similar effect) drug is put in, or a different(no similar effect) drug is put in, or nothing at all. Some examples of similar-effect drugs are (DXM [cough medicine] Piperazine [does have bad effects and is no where near as good as MDMA] etc)

Ecstasy usually comes in 3 forms

PURES which are powder sometimes pures have cut to be able to press them into pills so not truly pure.

Rolls which are cut with anything from coke to speed gives you a rush affect before it kicks in .

Splits which are cut usually with heroin or other downers will give a dark sick feeling first then kick in these are the most dangerous because both drugs dehydrate the body quickly and will cause you to choke or overheat rapidly.
