In an engine, indicated power is the power produced in the cylinder and the brake power is the useful power at the output shaft.

Brake power is always less than indicative, due to losses by mechanical friction and parasitic loads (oil pump, air conditioner compressor, etc...)

The two are related by (mechanical efficiency) = (brake power) / (indicative power)

Is brake fluid the same thing as power steering fluid?

no, brake fluid is not the same as power steering fluid, make sure you actually get the right stuff. and double check what type of brake fluid you have (dot 3/ dot 5) because there is a difference there too

What is meant by retardation test on diesel engine?

Retardation test on single cylinder 4 stroke diesel engine is to determine how the different forms of energy like brake power, frictional power, indicated power changes with respect to the reduction in engine speed.

What is the difference between brake horsepower and horsepower?

The difference between brake horsepower and horsepower or wheel horsepower, they are the same thing, is that brake horse power is the power produced by the crank. The wheel horsepower is the amount of power delivered to the wheels. Brake horsepower refers to the method used to test the engine. A brake is attached to the engine and used to maintain the engine at a constant RPM at full throttle. The delivered power output is then a simple calculation of RPM times torque. Horse power is based on the average amount of work that a horse could do in a day. It is taken to be 746watts. well you guessed it engine output is also specified in kilowatts so divide by 746 and you have horsepower. As stated above it is all the same thing. There is a difference between advertised horsepower and brake horsepower. Advertised horsepower is what a manufacturer will rate its engine/automobile/machine to produce. Brake horsepower is the actual measured horsepower, for example, of a motor on an engine dynamometer.

What is the difference between brake horse power and rear wheel horse power?

Brake horse power is power of engine or motor.Rear wheel hp is taken at rear wheels. There will be a small decrease from engine hp.There is a "loss"of hp as the "power"is transmited from engine to the transmission to differential to axle to tires. Anything that "turns" reduces the available power to the tires.......

What is brake thermal efficiency?

The ratio of brake power output to power input

What do you mean by the term mechanical efficiency of an engine?
