Resistance type Regulator uses Resistance & a selector switch to control the voltage. Actually in resistance type regulator the voltage control is done by voltage drop in resitance (converted into heat energy), which causes energy loss/wastage at lower speeds.

Whereas Electronic Regulators uses Triac or SCR based circuit and controls the firing pulse to reduce the output voltage. Here power loss is less at low speed in comparision to resitance type regulator.

Only disadvantage in local or cheaper Electonic regulators that at low speed Harmonic occurs which causes humming & heating up of Fan. Now a days Energy saver electronic regulators are also available which do not causes radio interference or haronics.

What are the workings of a regulator?

Fan regulators have an important place in the electrical switch boards. Fan regulators are very similar to light dimmers.Their function is to regulate/control the speed of the fan and provide a convenient environment for the residents. The traditional regulators which are bulky use a resistance having taps and connected in series with the fan. When we move the knob different amount of resistance gets inserted in the circuit. Although cheap the biggest problem with such a regulator is that a considerable amount of energy is lost in form of heat through the resistance. When the fan is operating at low speed the power loss is significant. The technologically superior electronic regulators overcome these problems by using electronic components to control the speed of the fan. Some of the advantages of electronic fan regulators are: 1. They provide a continuous speed control. 2. Power saving at all the speeds. 3. Smaller size and weight. The heart of the electronic fan regulator is TRIAC. TRIAC is a semiconductor device belonging to the family of thyristors.

What is the difference between a voltage converter and a voltage regulator?

the difference between a voltage converter to a voltage regulator,is that a voltage converter, converts or changing the desired voltage to be used while the voltage regulator, regulates the input of the voltage amount not to excess to its inputs.

How regulator works?

A fan regulator is a crucial component that serves to increase or decrease the speed of your fan according to your needs. To understand how a regulator works, you must know something about resistances. Any electrical conductor allows current to pass through it. The conductor however, offers a certain amount of resistance to the passage of current. The resistance depends upon the material of the conductor. The regulator has spools of wire with different amounts of resistances. When you set the knob at a particular position, you include a certain resistance in series with the fan. A series connection implies the resistance is in line with the fan. This reduces the voltage drop across the fan and its speed to your desired level. The greater the resistance, higher is the voltage drop across it and that lowers the speed of the fan.

How do you test rectifier regulator?

By checking the output V while operational. There is also a static test for resistance.

What is the difference of a fixed regulator from an adjustable regulator?

A fixed voltage regulator outputs only one specific voltage. An adjustable voltage regulator can be adjusted to output any voltage from the range it was designed for by changing the output resistors.
