Police are normal people; there is no difference except their profession.

However, there are some differences in what police do and what they carry, versus non-police personnel, such as:

  • Police receive specialized training in criminal justice topics. Non-police usually have no training.
  • Police are sworn in and take an oath to be an "Officer of the Peace" or "Peace Officer". Non-police do not take such an oath.
  • Police and Non-police have rights and responsibilities, but these differ from each other in many ways.
  • Most street police wear specific uniforms that identify them as police officers. Non-police do not.
  • Police officers are given a distinct badge. Non-police usually do not own any badge.
  • Many police wear bullet-proof vests under their clothing every day. Non-police do not.
  • Police can carry a gun every day. Non-police must have permits.
  • Police can carry a concealed gun. Non-police must have a special permit.
  • Police carry a baton or bully stick on their belts. Non-police do not.
  • Police can speed in order to do their jobs. Non-police cannot.
  • Police can stop a driver on any roadway. Non-police cannot and should not.
  • Police can use the cruiser to deliberately make another car spin. Non-police are not permitted to do this maneuver and should not drive in any way to deliberately hit another car.
  • Police can chase and tackle a person, without being charged with assault. would be charged with harassment, threats, and assault for doing this.
  • Police can go into a Judge's chambers to ask for a Warrant to be signed. Non-police usually do not have direct contact with a Judge and cannot ask for Warrants or Wiretaps.
  • Police can use specialized computers to look up motor vehicle information. Non-police cannot; it is an offense to access these records without reason and many dispatchers have lost their jobs because they misused access to these databases.
  • Police can arrest a person/s. Non-police can make a "Citizen's Arrest" under certain circumstances, but the police must charge and take the person into custody before the "arrest" is official.
  • Police routinely testify in Courts. Non-police usually don't have much contact with Courts unless they are criminals or witnesses and few non-police routinely testify in Courts.
  • Police have a right to detain a person. Non-police cannot; it could be considered kidnapping.
  • Police can transport a person, even if the person does not want to go where the police are going. Non-police cannot; it could be considered kidnapping.
  • Police are often viewed as community role models. Most Non-police are never thought of as role models, or it is with less frequency than a police officer.
