Fertilization.
The joining of an egg and a sperm is called fertilization, and the cell that forms is called a zygote.
The sperm and egg carry 1/2 the genetic code needed to create a new person. When the sperm meets the egg, those genes combine and the egg begins to divide. If all goes the way it is supposed to, the egg will implant in the uterus, grow a placenta, and eventually come busting out of the woman's vagina as a fully formed baby. awesome realy
It prevents secondary fertilization by another sperm cell.
Diploid cells are cells which contain 2 sets of chromosomes, which will later be divided into two sets of 23 chromosomes for each daughter cell. The total will come up to be 46 chromosomes. The other type of cell is a haploid. A haploid is a sex cell which contains 23 chromosomes. Later when the sperm enters the egg, or the egg meets the sperm the two sets of DNA (One from the sperm, and the other from the egg) will pair up to make another cell with 46 chromosomes. Different animals have different amounts of chromosomes. I have bases this answer on human cells.
A sperm fused with an egg
Yes, and this is one of the ways that you can get twins. The other of course is that the egg divides before the beginning of Mitosis.
