The Steyr AUG is an Austrian manufactured assault rifle which entered service in 1977. While not the first rifle to use this design, the AUG - along with the French FAMAS - was among the first rifles to see regular service which used the "bullpup" configuration, where the magazine and action is placed behind the trigger, thus shortening the overall length of the rifle without sacrificing barrel length. It's also noteworthy in its use of polymers for the actual receiver of the weapon, as opposed to the traditional steel or aluminum. It's the standard service rifle of the militaries of Austria, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand, and sees selective usage in several other militaries.
