It is the progression that takes place from an item being manufactured or produced until it is on the shelf at the retailer. It could also include the supply of raw materials to the manufacturer. For example, cotton goes to a mill where cloth is produced. This bulk cloth could be sent to a manufacturer who treats or dies the cloth and sends to a clothing manufacturer. The clothing manufacturer creates a shirt. The shirt is send to a distributor. The distributor sends to a large retailer. The large retailer sends the shirt to a specific store.
