There are two primary types of balancing machines, these are hard-bearing and soft-bearing machines. The difference between them, is in the shaft / bearing suspension and not the bearings.

In a hard-bearing machine, balancing when preformed is done at a frequency that is lower than the resonance frequency of the machine suspension. In a soft-bearing machine, balancing when preformed is done at a frequency higher than the resonance frequency. Both types of machines have various advantages / disadvantages. Hard-bearing machines are generally more versatile and can handle pieces with greatly varying weights and because hard-bearing machines are measuring centrifugal forces this then only require one-time calibration. Only five geometric dimensions need to be fed into the measuring unit to be ready for use. Therefore, ideal for low- and middle-size volume production and in repair workshops.

Soft-bearing machines are not so versatile with respect to amount of rotor weight to be balanced. Preparation of a soft-bearing machine, individual rotor types is more time consuming and needs calibration for every individual part. It is very suitable for high-production volume and high-precision balancing tasks.

Both types hard and soft-bearing machines can be automated to remove weight automatically, example such as by drilling or milling. Hard bearing machines are generally more robust and reliable. Both machine types can be integrated into a production line and loaded by a robot arm or gantry, requiring very little human control.

What is the difference between soft and hard objects explain?

Soft objects have a low rigidity and can easily change shape when pressure is applied, while hard objects have high rigidity and maintain their shape under pressure. Soft objects often have a smooth surface texture, while hard objects are typically rough or firm to the touch. Examples of soft objects include pillows or sponge, while examples of hard objects include rocks or metal.

What is the difference between soft and hard magnets?

Soft magnets are easily magnetized and demagnetized, while hard magnets retain their magnetism once magnetized. Soft magnets have low coercivity and high permeability, making them suitable for applications like electromagnets. Hard magnets have high coercivity and are used in applications where a strong, lasting magnetic field is needed, such as in permanent magnets.

What is the difference between soft and hard iron?

The essential difference between soft iron and hard iron is in the crystalline structure of the metals. This is sometimes due to the presence of impurities, but the over-riding effect is that of heat treatment. The basic techniques (for iron) are to get it white-hot, then cool it slowly; this produces soft iron. Alternatively, get it dull red, or bright red, or yellow, or white, then plunge it into cold liquid. This process, called quenching, hardens the iron. Picking the correct colour before quenching gives just the hardness needed.

Why does something that is soft absorb more sound than something that is hard?

Soft materials have a porous structure that allows sound waves to penetrate and get trapped inside, reducing the sound's ability to bounce or reflect. In contrast, hard materials reflect sound waves, causing them to bounce off surfaces and remain in the environment. This difference in how sound waves interact with soft and hard materials contributes to the soft material's better sound absorption properties.
