A bathhouse is basically a gay sex club. In the 1970s and 1980s, bathhouses were fairly common and featured not only rooms and areas for sexual activity but also swimming, hot tubs, exercise equipment, and sometimes movies and even live musical performances (Bette Midler got her start singing in bathhouses, actually). Since the 1990s, bathhouses are fewer in number but can still be found in most cities.
