A CVT or Continuous Variable Transmission is one that does not use gears and metal belts and gear linkages (imagine a 10-speed bike) but instead uses a band and pulleys (imagine an exercise band around your ankles). As you push the gas harder the band expands smoothly, continuously, so there is no shifting or drop from one gear to the next. This results in a smoother acceleration, better fuel economy because you are not "punching it" into a particular gear and that allows for less potential of gearbox (transmission) failure.
However, over time these bands wear and have been known to "slip",giving the CVT vehicle a feeling of power loss, especially in high heat or extreme altitude, mountainous terrain at higher speeds.
