The forward assist on an AR-15/M-16 style rifle forces the bolt forward. When you push the forward assist, it pushes against notches in the bolt carrier, which force the bolt to move forward and lock into the barrel extension even harder than it already is. It's used to silently close the bolt securely, and to make sure the bolt is in battery.

1. Remove clutch pedal assembly from car. 2. Remove fulcrum bolt. 3. Install clutch assist spring. 4. Align fulcrum (say, with a screwdriver tip). 5. Insert fulcrum bolt. 6. Reinstall clutch pedal assembly.
To test the forward assist after assembling it, you can load a dummy round into the chamber, then push the forward assist to ensure it can fully engage the bolt. Cycle the charging handle, then push the forward assist again to verify that it remains engaged. Repeat this process a few times to ensure the forward assist functions smoothly and effectively.
Pull back on the charging handle. With the charging handle (and bolt) pulled back to the rear, engage the bolt catch to lock the bolt to the rear. Return the charging handle back to the forward position. Insert a magazine into the magazine well, ensuring it's seated and secure. Press the bolt release to send the bolt forward. Tap the forward assist a couple times to ensure the bolt is fully forward.

The M16 series may be different today, but during the Vietnam War on the last round (from either a 20 or 30 round magazine) the bolt and dust cover stayed open on the final shot. All you had to do was slap another magazine into the well and snap the bolt release button which slammed the bolt closed...then give the forward bolt assist (located on the right side) a quick strike with the heel of your shooting hand to ensure the old jungle rifle was ready to fire.
