The XYZ Affair was an incident of US Foreign Relations involving US envoys to France and un-named French dimplomats who used the code names of X, Y, and Z. Under the instruction of the French diplomat Talleyrand (Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord), X Y and Z were to demand bribes and payments from the US envoys in exchange for cessation of French hostility to US merchant ships as a result of the US entrance into the Jay Treaty with Great Britain.
