A "dip" was a slang name of the time for a candle. In those days candles were created by "dipping" wicks in to wax (for the more expensive versions) or cold animal fat for the cheaper version - This dipping required continual dipping in to the melted wax/fat and allowed to cool to become hard. Then the shape of a candle was formed.
