To get the message across that Christmas wasn't about greed and profiteering. That it was a spiritual time. A time for humility and charity to those less fortunate. To show that one can feel good without needing financial gain to feel good.
"A Christmas Carol" is a classic novella by Charles Dickens that tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly old man who is visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. Through these supernatural encounters, Scrooge learns the true meaning of Christmas and undergoes a transformation from a greedy, selfish man to a generous and compassionate one.
A thinly veiled morality tale about the perils of ignoring poverty and being blind to people's problems when you have money to spare (like Scrooge) and are so stingy you do not even enjoy it yourself - never mind helping others. The ghosts teach him a lesson and he learns to seize the day and help people less fortunate than himself. Dickens was appalled at the poverty he saw around him in London and so wished to open the eyes of the middle and upper classes who read his literature - he knew he could reach many as his work was often serialised in newspapers. He knew poverty first hand as his improvident father was briefly imprisoned for debt. Dickens was compelled to work in a blacking factory for eight months when he was 11, an experience that marked him for life.
it's about a man named Scrooge who hates Christmas and every time he hears about Christmas he says humbug. his nephew works for him and he won't let his nephew spend Christmas at home but at work. he is a very cold and mean man and eventually he gets visited by spirits who confront about his ruthless behaviour.
In its initial level the book in about a mans life which has changed since his childhood to focus not on the real meaning of life and love that surrounds him but of money and the power that brings. His experiences 3 apparitions which guide him and show him what was and what will be as his life come to a close. This brings about a change in the man and he sees that he can still do business but in a manner that allows him to more good and to accept that the good will shown by many at Christmas can carry on through the year.
In its real state the book was written by Dickens to show the ignorance and injustice of people with power and money at that time in Britain. Many of the Mine and Factory owners were influential in the Parliament of the time when a bill to look after children who were working many many hours each week for little money and with little consideration for their safer was not passed by the members of Parliament - Dickens who himself was taken out of school at 12 to work in a factory that made black shoe polish had seen first hand the poor conditions and even poorer pays for those young people. He also wanted to highlight the want and suffering of families who were often forced in to the workhouse. These places were nothing less than a living hell.
