How did champagne get its name?

True 'Champagne' is made exclusively in the Champagne region of France. The rest, like 'California Champagne' is not truly Champagne, but a similar sparkling wine. France recently expanded the region within Champagne where Champagne can be produced. Before the expansion, sparkling wine produced a few yards across the line of demarcation could not be sold as "Champagne." Now it can. When the lines were re-drawn in the early 20th century, the result was known as the Champagne Riots or the Champagne War. Such arbitrary changes can result in enormous price changes in wine that is completely indistinguishable.

How many wars has champagne survived?

In addition to military wars, Champagne survived the infamous "Champagne war" in which residents fought bitterly over re-drawing the arbitrary lines specifying the area in which sparkling wines could be marketed as Champagne. Those lying a few yards outside the line could only be marketed as charmat for a fraction of the price. Recently the line was been expanded so that some of the earlier-designated charmat can now be marketed as Champagne. Because none of the earlier-designated Champagne area was reverted to charmat status, everyone is happy. Of course, consumers now pay much, much more for the wine that was earlier called charmat. It's all about money rather than quality.

Why is it the last time I drank champagne 2 years ago I had gout. I have not drunk it until last weekend and now have gout again Is this linked with champagne.?

Yes, wine and beer are fermented products which produce yeast which you must avoid. Beer more so than wine or champagne but if the wine or champagne has a high degree of yeast in their product, you can get an attack. Drink in moderation! One or two glasses and that's it.

What is the difference between champagne and champenoise?

"Champagne" is legally restricted to the sparkling wine of France's Champagne region produced according to its official standards. Similarly-produced wine from elsewhere was sometimes labeled "méthode Champenoise". Since the latter term is now banned in the EU, it is more common to see "méthode traditionnelle".
