The likelyhood is that the gun will never be seen or heard from again, but in the off chance it is used in a crime you want a record of the fact it was stolen, not given. If you loan a weapon (be it a gun, Baseball bat, or kitchen knife) to anyone and it winds up used in a crime, you may be considered an accessory for providing means.
