It may be that he wants to see your reaction if he does decide to break up with you, or (sorry, but this is the hard truth as I know people who have been in the spot of you boy friend) he does want to split up, but he does not want to hurt your feelings, so when he tried to do it, he saw you get upset and said he was joking.
